POWERING PARADISE: RENEWABLE ENERGY INITIATIVES AT VELIGANDU MALDIVES

Sustainability through renewable energy at Veligandu Maldives

At Veligandu Maldives, sustainability goes far beyond what guests see during their stay. While many initiatives are experienced through thoughtful dining, conscious housekeeping, and mindful amenities, some of the most impactful work happens quietly behind the scenes, powering the island itself.
In the middle of the Indian Ocean, where every drop of fuel and every unit of energy matter, Veligandu Maldives is embracing a smarter and more sustainable way to operate through renewable energy and efficient island systems.

Since its introduction in November 2024, the solar energy system at Veligandu Maldives has been quietly shaping the way the island is powered, marking a long-term shift toward cleaner and more responsible operations.

Now, more than two years into operation, it has become an essential part of daily island life, working seamlessly in the background to support guest comfort while reducing reliance on diesel fuel.

Much like our approach to sustainability across the resort, its impact is not always immediately visible, but it is deeply felt.

Clean Energy, Lasting Impact

Today, the system continues to deliver consistent results that support both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility:

• Approximately 200,000 kWh of solar energy generated per month
• Around 55,000 litres of diesel saved per month
• Approximately 150,000 kg of carbon dioxide saved per month
• Up to 8 hours of generator OFF time per day

These figures represent more than operational improvements. They reflect a continued
commitment to reducing environmental impact while maintaining uninterrupted luxury
experiences for our guests.

Built for Island Living

Designed for the unique demands of a remote island environment, the system combines large-scale solar generation with intelligent battery storage and energy management. With more than 3,000 solar panels installed across Veligandu Maldives and Velifinolhu, the island is able to operate primarily on solar energy during daylight hours, significantly reducing dependence on diesel-powered generation. The transition to renewable energy has been carefully integrated into daily operations, ensuring that sustainability enhances rather than interrupts the guest experience.

Behind The Scenes Of Island Living

Sustainability at Veligandu Maldives extends beyond what guests experience in their villas… it is also something they can discover firsthand. Every Friday, guests are invited to join our complimentary Heart of the House Tour, available for booking via the mobile app. This behind-the-scenes experience offers insight into how the island operates, including how clean energy is generated, stored, and managed. Key stops include the power house and battery room, where guests can see how solar energy supports island-wide operations in real time. It is a rare opportunity to connect the comfort of the guest experience with the systems working quietly behind it.

A Continuing Commitment

Now well established as part of island operations, the solar energy system reflects a long term commitment to responsible hospitality. It represents a practical and meaningful step toward reducing environmental impact while maintaining the standards of comfort and luxury that define Veligandu Maldives.

Experience Responsible Resort Island Living

At Veligandu Maldives, sustainability is not a separate initiative… it is part of how the island functions every day.

By investing in renewable energy and improving operational efficiency, we are taking meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future. One where luxury and environmental responsibility exist in harmony.

“Solar energy is not just a system… it is part of a larger commitment to protecting the natural beauty that surrounds us.”
