Situated at the gateway to the North Ari Atoll, the channel acts as one of the busiest marine corridors in the region. As nutrient-rich currents flow into the atoll, they attract an incredible variety of marine life, creating ideal conditions for pelagic encounters.
Rather than remaining in one place, divers drift naturally with the incoming current as the reef gradually unfolds beneath them. Every section of the dive reveals something new, from dramatic coral formations to open blue-water encounters.

Before Sunrise, The Search Begins
For many experienced divers, Friday mornings begin long before dawn. At 6:30 a.m., divers gather at the Ocean Dive Center before departing by Dive Dhoni at 6:45 a.m. for one of Veligandu Maldives’ most anticipated weekly dives, the Big Blue Hammerhead Dive.
The destination is Hammerhead Shark Point, located approximately 100 metres beyond the Madivaru Corner reef.
As the first light of sunrise begins to illuminate the horizon, divers descend into the open blue to depths of around 25 to 28 metres. Unlike a traditional reef dive, there is nothing but endless blue water stretching in every direction as divers drift silently, searching for the unmistakable silhouette of a hammerhead shark. It is a moment filled with anticipation.
Then, if fortune is on your side, a graceful hammerhead emerges from the blue before disappearing just as mysteriously into the depths.
As the incoming current gathers strength, the dive gradually transitions back towards the vibrant Madivaru reef, combining the excitement of open-ocean exploration with the rich marine life of the channel.
For many divers, it becomes the highlight of their stay at Veligandu Maldives.
